Old PHP Scripts Compatibility with Actual Hosting Services - - The use of globals variables in PHP

PHP programming language provides you a simple way to define functions and variables. The concept of PHP variables is complex in ensemble, but for start let's say that variables used inside PHP code begin with the $ sign and do not need to be initialised.

You must make the difference between older versions of PHP, when variables had a global character and the newest PHP versions in which variables are super globals.

For example, older PHP scripts, made before the apparition of PHP 4.2 version are not using super global definition of variables and as a consequence they will not work on the new versions of PHP, because the default setting in PHP configuration file (PHP.ini) is register_globals off.

You should not be surprised that when you test an older script you cannot run it, but it is a solution for this problem: turn register_globals on in php.ini by modifying the appropriate line. If you use an online webserver, then this setting is not recommended from security reasons.

If you are a PHP coder and use old PHP templates, you should consider rewriting them in order to be compatible with actual Apache and PHP distributions. You can check the script requirements to see if it requires the register_globals to be on. Depending on the webhosting service, there are still situations when register_globals is enabled in php.ini file.

If you do not have access to the server configuration files you can add a .htaccess file to the root directory of your PHP script in order to be able to use scripts that require register_globals on. The .htaccess file must contain the line

CODE
php_admin_flag register_globals on

Another way to enable the register_globals on is to use the function ini_set() inside your PHP scripts. You can check the register_globals status (on or off) by using php_info() function or the appropriate option in your web account control panel. In order to have applications easy to maintain, portable, secure and with an optimal performance it is recommended to maintain the register_globals off setting and to convert the old code to the actual specifications of PHP coding standards.

Low Hard Disk Space on Your Web Hosting Account?

Gain more disk space on Apache web hosting accounts
If you have a web hosting account and your site is hosted on an Apache web server, some day you can run out of hard disk space due to the fact that your site is growing and you add content constantly to it. To buy another hosting account which offers you more hard disk space is not the desired solution. This is the ultimate one.

Even in more critical cases, you can try some simple actions with the attempt to free up as much hard disk space as you can. First, you must identify which files are not needed and occupy the most of your hard disk space. You should know that Apache log files can be bigger at a given time due to an increase site traffic or many errors in your web applications. They could have 500 MB or more in some cases, as a consequence, if you do not need them their deletion is recommended, but if you want to analyse website traffic or errors, then you should archive them.

If you do not have access to a web account administration control panel, you can connect to the webserver using ftp and then find the directory named logs and there you will retrieve the log files. If you still want to have a small error log file, then it is recommended to maintain your website error free as much as possible. On the other side, the disk based file caching should be managed according to the disk size.

Webmail management is also important in order to reduce the degree of hard disk occupation. Unused email accounts should be deleted. If you did any backups on your website it is recommended to keep them on your local hard disk or other storage media. If you want to keep them on the web server, then you should archive them too. In case you use databases, they should also have tables optimized in order to gain disk space and a higher speed of scripts execution. But the best practices in order to have enough disk space is to use lightweight scripts and databases, optimize images and delete the Apache server logs if you do not use them.

The Legal Web-Based “Scam” (and How to Make Money from It) - Cybersquatting

As you might have noticed, the Internet can give one person a lot of money making options. It ensures communication and it is a great market for just about anything. You can buy a lot of stuff on the Net, from drugs and weapons to fluffy bunnies and chocolate. There is a lot of stuff sold over the Internet and some people choose to buy something on the web and sell the exact same thing for a higher price to a more gullible person. Nobody can do anything to these individuals, because this is just basic commerce.
And there’s another thing – some products are unique, that’s why a lot of people pay a lot of money to buy them, especially if those unique products are really useful. Of course, some people have made the most of this. One of these unique products is domain names. Some people go ahead and buy domains because some firms or other people are eventually going to want those.
Of course, they are not going to keep the domain for themselves, but sell it for a high price. This thing is called cybersquatting. Thing is, the law does not curb the number of domains that one may own, that’s why a Chinese woman by the name of Zheng Qingyin had registered about 10.000 .eu domain names. Wow! Huge number! In any case, they have been suspended by EURid, which is a Belgium-based registry for .eu domain names. The woman has sued them and now wants her domains back, because after all, it’s her right to buy as many domains as she likes. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done against the cybersquatter, but it is simply unjust for people to be unable to buy the domains that they want, just because someone else snatched them.
